Synopsis: Philip Carey, club-footed and a failed painter, arrives in Edwardian London to study medicine. He meets and falls in love with a Cockney waitress, Mildred, who soon quarrels with him and jilts him. He then meets Nora, a young widow, whose love and understanding enable him to pass his next exams. He deserts her to care for Mildred when she returns to him discarded and pregnant. Once the baby is born she flaunts her infidelity and revulsion for him, and he finally leaves her. After qualifying he falls in love with the daughter of a patient but is haunted by Mildred, now a prostitute in the slums. Not until after her death, and the funeral which he gives her as a last gesture, is he free to live happily.
