Synopsis: In the early 18th century during the War of the Spanish Succession, Queen Anne’s poor health finds her relying on her doting but ruthless friend Lady Sarah Churchill. When Sarah’s cousin Abigail Masham arrives at the Palace as a maid, her charm soon wins the Queen’s attentions and Abigial sees a way to restore her social status after her father’s gambling debts reduced her family to poor circumstances. The two women soon become rivals for the Queen’s affections and a power struggle develops between them against a backdrop of political conflict between Whigs and Tories.
