Synopsis: During the early years of the Second World War, Allied forces retreat from the European mainland via the coast near Dunkirk. They are slowly evacuated using a range of marine vessels but the bombardment of the enemy provides a nerve-shattering and dangerous obstacle to escape. The story is told in three sections, with the event viewed in each through the different perspective of participants on land, in the air, and at sea.
