- SynopsisPeriod drama. Adaptation of the novel by Edith Wharton. Lily Bart is an attractive young woman living at the turn of the century in New York. She and lawyer Lawrence Selden are attracted to each other, but Selden is not quite rich enough to satisfy Lily. Lily visits the country home of businessman Gus Trenor and his wife, and Gus offers to invest some money of Lily's, but in return forces his attentions on her at his city apartment. Lily finds herself in debt as a result. Although financier Sim Rosedale offers marriage, Lily turns him down. When she attends a trip to the Mediterranean, invited by socialite Bertha Dorset, Bertha's husband George tells Lily he would divorce Bertha if he had solid proof of her numerous affairs. Lily has proof in the form of love letters to Bertha, but since the lover in question was Lawrence Selden, Lily refuses to use them, and remains in debt. (Synopsis)
