The Tragic Test (Original title)
Date: 23 November 1995 (Television)

Country: United Kingdom

Director: Howard Bradburn, Mark Rubens

Synopsis: Amneocentesis is a test used on certain mothers to detect foetal abnormality. A needle withdraws fluid from the amneotic sac while a simultaneous scan of the uterus avoids damage to the baby. An older method - scan first and then insert the needle - can cause damage if the baby moves. 30% of British hospitals still use the older method. Denmark has banned it and has tight controls on the new method. Examples of brain damaged children are shown including a twin born blind and deaf at St Mary's Paddington. At All Saint's Chatham a baby died after the scan; the new method is now used. Speakers include Prof Nicholas Fisk of Queen Charlotte and Chelsea Hospital; Paddy Forbes, Obstetrics Manager at Hinchingbrooke; Prof Kypros Nicolaides of the Harris Birthright Trust; Prof Ann Tabor of Copenhagen; and solicitor Patricia Fearnley.
