Synopsis: Uses the diaries and correspondence of Ethel Symth and Sarah Benett to reacpture their experiences as members of the women's movement. They joined the suffragette campaign and were both imprisoned in Hollway for breaking windows.Synopsis: The fourth programme in a six-part series that attempts to recapture the lives of ten extraordinary women through their own writings. Uses the correspondence and diaries of composer Ethel Smyth and Sarah Benett who shared neighbouring cells in Holloway Prison for breaking windows - a tactic used by suffragettes to draw attention to the movement's aims. Sarah Benett who was 52 at the time of her imprisonment fought to improve the working conditions of the poor in the Staffordshire potteries.
