Synopsis: Ashley Fowle, 4, was diagnosed as having an inoperable brain tumour. Professor Fred Epstein, Director, Paediatric Neurosurgery at the New York University Medical Center, believed he could successfully operate and the family raised money to send Ashley to America. The operation was a success. He was first diagnosed at the Maudsly Hospital and Guy's who said the oepration was not possible in this countyr. Jo Gould and Alison McCluskie also went to the US for treatment with different kind of tumours on funds. Alison was paid for by her local area health authority, Jo's treatment was paid for by public donation and cost £35,000. A BIG STORY survey of health authorities brought 70 replies. 4 had written guidleines about funding operations, another 44 wanted guidelines laid down nationally.
