He is united with her and their son and eventually she sacrifices herself. The child is adopted by the father and his wife. Rl. 1. At a nightclub in Paris during the First World War two British officers arrive on ten days leave. Lola performs in the club and is invited to have a drink by one of the officers. The other, David Halford, castigates her for her romanticising of the war. Later he sees her outside her house and asks for forgiveness. Three days later they have fallen in love. They decide to marry before he returns to the front. David sets off to find the English Church but meets an officer who orders him back to the front as all leave has been cancelled (1340ft). Rl. 2 Lola is left alone waiting for David to return. He sends an explanatory note asking her to wait for him. At the front he is wounded in the attack and is sent back home to England having lost his memory for all of the preceding war years. Some years later he is working as a senior civil engineer. He is successful but unhappy. He is married to a socialite who is so involved in her social round that they hardly see each other. She is organising a charity ball. David goes to the theatre and the star of the show is Lola. At first he does not recognise her though she has seen him in his box, but later she sings the song that she had performed in Paris and David's memory returns. He sends a note to Lola. Later at her apartment her doctor, Garvin, warns her that her heart is so weak that, should she dance again, the chances are she will die. David arrives and they renew their old love. Lola introduces David to his son and broaches the subject of marriage (2311ft). Rl. 3. He tells her that he is already married. He goes home and asks Vesta if she is prepared to adopt his son. She refuses and also refuses divorce. Lola visits Vesta and begs her to change her mind. She is adamant. Lola is shown out. Later David and Lola decide to return to Paris with the child and bring it up there. David goes home to pack. Vesta goes to visit Lola and suggests that it is not fair on the child for it to be brought up in such circumstances. She offers to adopt the child. (1307ft). Rl. 4. David returns to pick up Lola who explains that she has had her mind changed by Vesta. David is appalled but she tells him it is for the the best. He takes the child home. David visits Dr. Garvin who tells him there is nothing he can do for Lola. Lola has decided to dance at a charity function knowing the likely outcome. Garvin and David are warned. She dances and collapses and dies as Garvin and David arrive. The child has been accepted by Vesta. (1354ft). (6312ft).
