- SynopsisComedy. As Maya Vargas turns 43 she longs for a promotion after 15 years as assistant manager at Value Shop, but she is overlooked. Her boyfriend Trey and best friend Joan try to cheer her up. Invited to a job interview at high-end cosmetics company Franklin & Clarke, Maya finds that her godson has boosted her online identity with outrageous claims that her life's accomplishments include a degree from Wharton, time serving in the Peace Corps and fluent Mandarin. When she gets the job, she believes she can live up to it and, aided by her colleagues Ariana and Chase, hold her own against the rival executives, Hildy and Ron, who go up against her in a project to see who can improve a skin cream brand better. A big surprise is in store for Maya which has nothing to do with the firm but everything to do with the boss's daughter. Soon Maya feels under pressure to reveal that her getting the job involved some lies, but she also feels that with her street smarts and shop-floor experience, she knows what customers want, and that she can do what's needed better than the people with business degrees.
