Synopsis: When Group Captain Tony Winster gives Janet Ware a brooch in Oxford in 1911 his father turned him out of the house. In the present, Mrs Ware explains the history of the brooch and its significance for Janet's mother and Tony's relatives. Like his familial predecessor, Tony disappears, a fact reported by the newspapers, until it comes to light that he is attempting to set an air speed record in a new jet plane.
