Synopsis: A five-part schools television series which profiles five contemporary Scottish writers. The programmes are designed to excite an enthusiasm for literature, and to develop students' skills in critical appreciation. In their own words, the profiled writers discuss topics such as language, choice of themes, motives for writing and the craft of writing. The series reveals writers in their social context and uses stylised studio segments to bring their work to life. The individual programme titles and writers are: Iain Banks; Liz Lochhead; William McIlvanney; A L Kennedy; Iain Crichton Smith.
