Carnival (Original title)Venetian Nights (Alternative title)
Date: 25 January 1932 (Release)

Country: United Kingdom

Director: Herbert Wilcox

Synopsis: The Italian husband and wife actors Silvio and Simonetta Steno are performing in a stage version of 'Othello' in Venice during carnival time. Silvio, under the influence of his vindictive sister Italia, begins to suspect his wife of having an affair with Count Andrea Scipio. The Count does attempt to seduce Simonetta, but she remains faithful to her husband. Silvio, however, is now riven with jealousy and during a performance of the play attempts to strangle Simonetta during the scene where Othello attempts to do the same to Desdemona. Regaining his senses before he has killed her, Simonetta, backstage in the dressing room, convinces her husband that she has not been unfaithful and the couple are reconciled. Note: The Archive copy derives from the 1938 reissue which was a 1931 print with a new title card added containing the name of the distributor of that year, Equity British, plus 'Bernard Smith presents'. The copy includes the stencil colour sequences.
