The story begins in 1984 at the height of the miners' strike in Durham, where Billy's elder brother, Tony, and his father are protesting with their fellow workers on the picket lines. Billy's father wants him to take boxing classes, but Billy is much more interested in the ballet class which takes place at the same gym. The teacher encourages Billy's efforts, but when his father finds out, Billy is taken out of class. However, the teacher offers Billy private tuition to prepare for a local audition for the Royal Ballet's training school. (Synopsis) Set in County Durham in 1984 at the height of the coal miners' strike, the story of an 11 year-old boy, whose father and older brother are both on strike, who swaps boxing classes for ballet lessons. Despite his family's initial opposition, he is encouraged by his teacher to try out for the Royal Ballet School in London. (Synopsis)
