- SynopsisRomantic comedy, set in London in 1593, about a well-born young woman so desperate to act that she disguises herself as a man in order to audition for a part in Shakespeare's new play `Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter'. The penurious playwright, who is suffering from writer's block, falls in love with her and finds a new lease of creative power. (Synopsis) William Shakespeare is suffering from writer's block. Fortunately he meets a young lady, Viola De Lesseps, falls in love, and his creative abilities come to the fore once again. Unfortunately, she is already set to marry Lord Wessex. To add to the confusion, when casting sessions take place for the enlivened bard's latest offering, Viola disguises herself as a young man since women are not allowed to act, succeeding in gaining the part of Romeo in the new play, and thereby causing romantic complications to ensue.
