- SynopsisA five-part unit from the schools series which supports topic work. Profiles the lives of five famous people whose actions, experiences or inventions have had a direct influence on life in Britain today. Each programme begins with a storyteller who introduces and recounts key events from the subject's life. A key moment in history is dramatically reconstructed, and a piece of physical evidence is produced to support the story. The individual programmes and their themes are: `George Stephenson - steaming away' the railway engineer's story, culminating in the historic trial of the `Rocket'; `Grace Darling - to the rescue' the story of the daughter of a lighthouse keeper and her dramatic rescue of shipwrecked steamboat passengers; `Alexander Graham Bell - ringing the changes' profile of the inventor of the telephone; `Mary Seacole - battling to save lives' the story of the Jamaican/Scots nurse who, despite being rejected by the British Army because of her colour, financed her own mercy mission to the Crimea; `Neil Armstrong - man on the moon' the story of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
