- SynopsisThriller. One Friday evening, Andrew Wyke, a successful writer of old-fashioned detective fiction, welcomes the younger Milo Tindle, a hairdresser, to his Wiltshire manor house. Wyke soon reveals that he knows Tindle is having an affair with Marguerite, Wyke's wife. Wyke says Tindle can marry her, as long as Milo can keep her in the expensive lifestyle she has grown used to; Wyke does not want her back. To this end, Wyke suggests that they stage a robbery in the house, with Tindle posing as the burglar, in order to commit an insurance fraud on Marguerite's jewels. As this plan unfolds, however, some dark secrets come to the surface and the plan becomes more of a game of oneupmanship than it seemed, with possibly deadly results. When, duly, Wyke answers the door to local policeman Inspector Doppler, there is much confusion about Friday evening's events: an alleged murder with no trace of a body, yet traces of blood suggesting it was no mere game.
