- SynopsisStudy of the career of a well-loved schoolmaster from a young man starting teaching at a public school into old age, still teaching at the same school, and living near it after retirement. (Synopsis)
- Work historyThe opening credits include the following statements: "To Sidney Franklin...for his contribution in the preparation of the production...grateful acknowledgment" "We wish to acknowledge here our gratitude to the late Irving Thalberg, whose inspiration illuminates the picture of 'Goodbye, Mr. Chips'. [signed] James Hilton, Victor Saville, Sam Wood, Sidney A. Franklin, R.C. Sherriff, Claudine West, Eric Maschwitz When the film was reissued in Britain in 1944, amendments were made to the opening credits as cited below (the credits on Sift are those of the 1939 version): The opening credits of the 1944 reissue omitted the dedication to Irving Thalberg; Paul Henreid's name was spelt thus and not as Paul von Hernried; the 'Western Electric Sound System' credit was changed to 'Western Electric Mirrophonic Recording'; the production company credit was changed from 'Produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer British Studios, Ltd.' to 'A Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer British Picture'; and the main title was changed from GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS to GOODBYE MR CHIPS!, thus omitting the punctuation and adding the closing exclamation mark.
