- SynopsisThriller. Iris Henderson, a young Englishwoman travelling abroad with two friends, is about to head back to London, to get married to Charles, a man she does not really love. Due to complications with the train, many travellers have to stay overnight in the overcrowded inn by the station (including two Englishmen keen to get home and a couple, the Todhunters, who have a secret to hide). Also in the inn are Miss Froy, an old governess journeying home now that her charges are grown, and a musician, Gilbert, who annoys Iris by too loudly making a study of local folk dances in the room above hers. The next day on the platform, as the train is about to depart, Iris is hit on the head by a falling plant pot, just as she helps Miss Froy with her bag. On the train, Miss Froy duly looks after Iris, but after a doze, Iris wakes up to find not only that Miss Froy has disappeared, but that the other passengers and train staff deny ever having seen her. Iris is plunged into a web of mystery and peril, aided principally by Gilbert and an eminent brain surgeon, Dr Hartz, who is in the process of transporting a badly damaged patient wrapped in bandages to hospital for an operation. A baroness, a nun, a set of magician's props, a packet of tea and a certain folk melody all play unexpectedly important roles in the unravelling of the puzzle. (Synopsis)
