- SynopsisProvides a history of the self-portrait, to coincide with "Face to Face" an exhibition of self-portraits at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. It compares and contrasts many of the paintings included in this exhibition with those on show at the "Not Self Portrait" exhibition which was held earlier this year at the Karsten Schubert Gallery in London. Artists Richard Hamilton and Marc Quinn debate the value of their own work as self-portraiture, while critic Richard Shone assesses the impact of photography on the genre. (Synopsis) Traces the evolution of the self-portrait, from prehistoric cave drawings to photo-me-booths. Describes some favourite self-portraits, suggesting reasons why artists hide behind guises, and looking at the difference between introspective and extrovert portraits.
