- SynopsisGothic drama. In seventeenth-century Spain, Ambrosio is a pious Capuchin friar who was brought to the monastery as a baby and whose sermons are powerful advocations to steer clear of temptation lest one fall into damnation. One day a hoarse-voiced young man named Valerio arrives at the monastery. Valerio wears a face mask after being horribly disfigured in a fire and longs to retreat from the world. On Ambrosio's suggestion Valerio is allowed to remain, on his own, in a separate part of the monastery. It becomes clear that Valerio has strange healing powers, and Ambrosio learns that what lies under the mask is not what the monks have been led to believe. When he tells Valerio to leave, Ambrosio is bitten by a mysterious garden creature, and falls desperately ill. His recovery does not leave his soul in its former holy state, however, and he becomes decidedly over-involved in the lives of a mother and daughter from a nearby town who seek his help. (Synopsis)
