- SynopsisFantasy adventure. The writer Edgar Rice Burroughs is summoned by lawyers to a stately home, where he must read the diary of the recently deceased John Carter. The diary tells of a fantastical adventure, in which Carter, a Virginian American Civil War soldier, falls foul of the army and hides in a cave, where a mysterious medallion transports him to Mars. There Carter gets involved in a Martian civil war, aiding a princess in her battle against an enemy alien tribe. On finishing reading the diary, Rice Burroughs finds himself charged with a task of the utmost importance that will have a great bearing on the events he has just read about. (Synopsis)
