- SynopsisA three-part unit of dramatised programmes which explores the world of Ancient Egypt through the life of the Italian Egyptologist, Giovanni Belzoni and his family. Belzoni, a 6'8" ex-circus strong man with little formal education, arrived in Egypt in 1819 knowing next to nothing about the subject. In the next four years, he made a succession of remarkable discoveries. He was the first European to enter the temple of Abu Simbel, he opened up the entrance into one of the Great Pyramids, and discovered the tomb of Seti I in the Valley of the Kings. He also kept a journal upon which the unit draws. The programmes combine documentary film of the sites he visited with reconstructions of his main exploits. They are: Belzoni: strong man on the Nile; Rameses the Great; Secrets of the Tombs. (Synopsis)
