- SynopsisDocumentary series. The story behind a bitter conflict during the last phase of the British Empire, which saw the Mau Mau attack white settlers in a savage bid for independence and revenge. During the whole of the conflict, only 32 white settlers were actually killed, but at least 11,500 Mau Mau died, 11 of them in a scandalous incident in a prison, when they were beaten to death by guards for refusing to undertake some work. The political and media uproar that resulted, despite an attempted cover-up, united disparate politicians, including Barbara Castle who is interviewed for the programme, and was to lead directly to the end of the conflict. Settlers, diplomats, soldiers, and Mau Mau are interviewed for the programe. (Synopsis)
