- SynopsisProduction footage for the OMNIBUS programme on Quentin Tarantino (tx. 25/10/94) of Tarantino being interviewed. ...Continued from tape 11. Tarantino talks about how his scriptwriting started while working at the Video Archives, and the planning and shooting of his first film MY BEST FRIEND'S BIRTHDAY. Describes the shooting of the film on weekends over a period of three years and how the finished result was appalling but an important experience. Went on to write TRUE ROMANCE and tried to negotiate a deal to direct it himself, but eventually backed down and sold it for the money. Then wrote NATURAL BORN KILLERS, but got nowhere with that either. At this time he met Lawrence Bender, and Tarantino explains how he and Bender planned to reshoot MY BEST FRIEND'S BIRTHDAY in black and white on 16mm, but this time in twelve days. Bender tries to sell the idea to financiers, but only with Tarantino as director. He explains how both Harvey Keitel and Monte Hellmann became interested in the project and how the script came into the hands of Richard Gladstein. This eventually would become RESERVOIR DOGS. Tarantino then explains the importance of the director's workshop at the Sundance Institute in the development of his directorial technique and the criticism he received over his use of long takes.
