In the 1940s, what is now Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal had a population of 60 million. When the Japanese cut through Burma, the British reponse was to concentrate food supplies on the war workers in Calcutta instead of those who had grown the food, thus devas- tating the local populace.
