- SynopsisFilm about a Russian one-act opera "Skripka Rothschilda" ("Rothschild's Violin") based on the short story of the same name by Chekhov. The opera was started by Benjamin Fleischmann before he was killed in World War II. Afterwards his teacher Dmitri Shostakovich completed and orchestrated the work but, since Fleischmann was a Jew the authories banned it after the first performance in 1968. The film is in three parts: the story of the relationship between pupil and teacher, Fleischmann and Shostakovich; a dramatisation of the opera, and a coda in which Shostakovich is transported to modern St Petersburg, and which reflects on the fate of the opera and Shostakovich's relationship with Jewish culture.
