(Synopsis) The third programme in a six-part series that attempts to recapture the lives of ten extraordinary women through their own writings. Tells the stories of two women: Miranda Stuart who disguised herself as a man in order to obtain a degree in medicine in 1832 and lived most of her life as Dr. James Barry, and Hannah Cullwick, a working-class woman befriended by the poet Arthur Munby who believed that women in servile labour could earn a nobility of the soul.
