- SynopsisA week at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, to look at the effects of shortages of beds, staff and money. The Patients Charter says that patients should be seen within 5 minutes of arrival, but it does not specify that a doctor or treatment should be available. Hence many patients are waiting or several hours. There is also a daily search for beds for emergency admissions. The Royal College of Surgeons says that overworked staff are causing fatal errors and patient deaths. Doctors say that patient expectations are raised too high; and the hospital has no idea how to save the £1 million it has been ordered to save. Tory Deputy Chairman, John Maples said recently that there should be a news blackout on the NHS; hospital managers and consultants disagree. (Synopsis)
