- SynopsisOld people are being discharged from hospitals unable to look after themselves. Long stay hospital beds have shrunk from 350,000 in 1990 to 80,000 now. The programme looks at five elderly people suffering a variety of illnesses, whose families can not give the necessary care, whose private home fees have bankrupted their spouses, who are isolated at home. Speakers also include a geriatrician; a GP; Michael Portillo MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury; and Peter Pinfield, head of Dudley Social Services. (NFA Catalogue) Dermot Murnaghan investigates the elderly who cannot afford to grow old in 1990's Britain. (Synopsis)
