- SynopsisPirate adventure. Female pirate Morgan Adams inherits her father Black Harry's ship and persuades the crew to let her lead them in a treasure hunt, to locate CutThroat Island, which does not appear on charts, and there to find the biggest hoard of Spanish jewels, gold and plunder ever taken. It was hidden there by her father and his two brothers, and they split the map in three, one brother each taking a piece, to guard its whereabouts. Now Morgan's uncle, Dawg, is ready to kill his family members to get his hands on the booty. Morgan buys a slave, William Shaw, who knows Latin, to help her. They set out to find out where the treasure is and set sail to capture it. (Synopsis)
- Work historyTitle note: It is a matter of debate how the title is meant to be written. The title appears on screen with the word 'CutThroat' as one word but with the second 't' capitalised (in addition to the initial 'C'). This would normally suffice for that version of the title to stand. Yet on the other hand, some publicity and other official materials (e.g. one citing of the rights company in some legal wording in the end credits, and essays by the director and composer included in the notes of the soundtrack album), write the word as 'Cutthroat', with only the initial capitalised. The onscreen title seems striking and unusual enough as to warrant regarding its unorthodox capitalisation as a deliberate artistic choice as opposed to a mere flourish of the graphics, which is why it is catalogued as 'CutThroat' here. (Furthermore, on a point of context, it might be noted that the story is set in 1668 and only pirates know of this island, so the chances of their being literate and indeed accurate about standardised English could be said to be low. It seems entirely feasible that they would write it as 'CutThroat'.) Budget note: Budget reported as $60 million. Reputed to have bankrupted its production company Carolco, which opted to make this as opposed to a project called 'The Crusades' when producers knew there was money only left for one more film.
