Steinway grand piano behind him. the audience watch, sitting in the round. Neil Young performs the song `Lonely Boy' (03.51). Young talks to the audience `This is a new song I wrote about a ranch. I live on a ranch in California. I just bought it a while ago from these two lawyers. And there was an old man living on it, I don't know if you have things like that here - foremen, on ranches. It's like an old caretaker, takes care of all the old cows, fences...so I wrote this song for him.' Young performs `Old Man' (07.51). Audience applaud. Young thanks the audience, gets up, puts guitar in rest and sits at the piano. `Now, this is pretty comfortable up here. This is another song I wrote about my home, 'cause I think about that a lot when I'm on the road. Makes me write a lot of songs, you know...'. Young performs `Journey Through the Past' (11.13). Applause. Young thanks audience, gets up from piano, picks up guitar and sits back in chair. `I'm going to sing another new one now', Young makes an indistinguishable aside to the crew. `Is every one having a good time, or what?'. He tests his harmonica. `I know these are new songs you know, maybe that's kinda weird'. He adjusts his harmonica. `It's very confusing. I just started playing this, getting my thumb caught in it all the time'. Young has removed the harmonica from its rest and trapped his thumb. `I just started playing this thing, and erm... you have to carry a different one for every key you're playing in'. Young takes a different harmonica from his inside jacket pocket. `You can't just move your hands to a another position. So I have to carry a lot of things in my pocket now'. He takes another harmonica from his pocket. `My pockets always used to have holes in them and I never, you know ... that's a line, forget that one. Here it is'. Young selects a harmonica. `This is in G, if anyone wants to blow along with me', `Anyone brought their (Mineben?) harmonicas?'. Young tries to put the harmonicas back in his pocket, he turns to the crew. `I think this is right, maybe I'll put these somewhere else'. He turns back to the audience. `It's sticking into me'. He puts a harmonica into the rest. `I don't travel with a band now, I've got so much equipment'. He tests the harmonica (13.12). Young performs `Heart of Gold' (16.25). Applause. Young thanks the audience, strums his guitar a bit, gets up and walks around to the audience. `I gotta move around a lot,' (inaudible words while he is away from a mic.), `This is my guitar'. He shows his guitar to the audience. `I wanted you to meet all my instruments. I'll introduce my harmonica to you later'. He sits down and removes the harmonica rest. `All this stuff, equipment here...' (17.17). Young retunes his guitar and goes straight into a performance of `Don't Let it Bring You Down' (19.52). Applause. Young thanks audience, gets up, puts guitar in rest and sits at piano. Sips from a styrofoam cup. `We're going to do another sad song folks. Finding it hard to ... oh, there's two of these!' He holds up two styrofoam cups, one in each hand. `Dual BBC cups. Hmm, in America, you know, they do things to cars. I don't know if you know, but... the reason I said dual BBC cups...'. He sips more water, then holds up both cups with the BBC logos on them showing. `Here's your thing from your show, so you can advertise: Don't miss it! Don't miss it!'. He shakes his head and acts as if he is doing an advert. ` On American televison they, you know, this kind of TV over here isn't the same as American TV. American TV they give a lot of commercials, you know, they don't know that you know what's on, you know. You know, like they take it for granted that you don't know anything. Start from there and work down. So, I was talking about American cars, you know, when you turn sixteen in America you get your drivers licence, that makes you a man ... Sixteen, and then ... well really it's a huge masculine, ah, symbol I guess in America. A man's car is ... a whole trip sometimes, you know. They have, you know, like mufflers and everything. They get them and they make them and they put stuff in the back, in the trunk, to make them this high off the ground, you know'. He places his hands about an inch apart. `So they look like they're going faster even when they're not even turned on ... Saying, "That guy sure must be far out - he's got such a far out car". And then they put aerials on them, one on each side and mufflers coming out the back and they change the lights on the back, make them big and red. Well I've got dual BBC cups on my grand piano. 1957 Buick piano, hmm. Here's something else that's happening with me...' (22.34). Young performs `A Man Needs a Maid' (26.16). Applause. Young thanks the audience. `Thank you. Forgot all about this one. I wrote this one in Vancouver, no, no - I wrote it in Detroit. Just trying to keep you up to date. I used to, I used to call this girl from the road, you know, that I never, that I was in love with, but I'd never really met. Used to talk to her on the phone all the time. Late at night, I'd talk to her on the phone 'cause of the time difference. And I'd wake up the next morning feeling so good.' (27.27) Young performs `Love in Mind'. Applause. Young thanks audience, gets up from piano, picks up guitar and sits down in seat. `Do y'all wanna, ..no..' (29.38). Young performs `Dance, Dance, Dance' (31.20). Young thanks audience, gets up and leaves the stage (31.45). The end titles roll up over the picture. "NEIL YOUNG SANG THE SONGS OF NEIL YOUNG", followed by credits (32.02). END. (NFA Catalogue)
