- SynopsisA policeman is told by his sweetheart that she will not marry him until he becomes a sergeant. He dreams of how he wins his stripes. Replacement main title. (1) Intertitle. (8) A maid and a policeman are seen talking outside the house where she works. She tells him that she will not marry him until he wins his sergeant's stripes. She goes back into her garden. The policeman continues on his beat, then sits down on a stile to rest and falls asleep. Intertitle. (59) A boy is seen kicking a football down a street and the policeman arrests him and leads him away. The boys changes into a mop and the football into a bucket. In the next scene the policeman gives chase to a cyclist. As he apprehends him the bicycle changes into a penny farthing and the cyclist rises up into the air, then comes down to earth and cycles off. The policeman shakes his fist and chases after him again. As he catches up this time the bicycle is transformed into a tandem ridden by a set of identical twins who change back into a single person and run off. The policeman picks up the bicycle and gives chase again but the bicycle changes into a donkey then disappears. The policeman dusts himself down and continues his beat. He follows a pickpocket who is stalking a likely victim, as he goes to arrest the criminal the latter is transformed into a postman who is emptying a pillarbox. The policeman walks on, he is then seen arresting a drunk, whose feet remain planted to the spot as the policeman leads him away. His legs stretch to more than twice their original length then spring back and he drunk disappears leaving the policeman holding an empty set of clothes. The policeman is next seen holding up a motor vehicle and taking details from the driver. Cut. The motor vehicle has changed into a water cart and the policeman is drenched. Finally the policeman stalks a young schoolboy who is smoking a cigar in a park. The repentant boy is then seen in the police station and is led away to the cells. The policeman is seen talking to his superior officer, and three stripes come away from a display cabinet on the wall into the officer's hand.
