- SynopsisComedy. The activities of an experimental mixed anti-aircraft battery somewhere in England during the Second World War. In 1940, the hapless Captain S. Melly is sent to take charge of an unruly training camp where male and female soldiers spend their time canoodling instead of learning how to operate anti-aircraft machinery. (Melly's despairing brigadier reasons that, since good Commanding Officers have all failed, they might as well try an inept one.) Melly does his best to stop the troop's antics, aided by Sergeant Major 'Tiger' Bloomer, who loves to shout but feels obliged to tone down his language in the presence of ladies. Melly suffers many indignities as a result of his efforts and furthermore he is outwitted at every turn. Melly tries to lead the troops on a twelve-mile march but they have sabotaged his uniform so it falls apart at the seams, leaving him in his underwear. As a punishment for laughing at him, he confines them to camp for two weeks, not realising that they would enjoy nothing more than this. Melly puts barbed wire round the women's hut to stop the men sneaking in at night, but the trainees simply dig tunnels beneath the huts. Melly tries to make the women dress less attractively by ordering that only trousers be worn, and to embarrass him, the women take his words literally and wear nothing but trousers. When the brigadier arrives to inspect the camp, things initially go badly. A pair of knickers is hoisted instead of a flag, and Melly, aghast, gives an order for the knickers to be taken down. Then a real air battle takes place overhead, and the trainees manage to pull together to shoot down some enemy aircraft. (Synopsis)
