- SynopsisDavid Gray is on holiday at the village of Courtempierre. He becomes involved with an old woman who continues to live after death by sucking the blood of young victims. Inspired by a collection of stories 'In a glass darkly' by Sheridan Le Fanu. (Synopsis)
- Work historyFilmed in 1930 with the dialogue scenes shot three times, with the actors mouthing their lines German, English and French. The soundtracks in the three languages were then added in 1932. Full-length German version was originally 2271 metres, but after censorship and reworking it was 2004 metres. German censors cut certain violent or gory scenes which were left in the French version. Several prints in the past were made up of material from different versions, with varying intertitles and soundtracks. German-language version of the film was restored by Martin Koerber and Cineteca di Bologna, and released in 1998. This restoration was then released in two different DVD editions, a two-disc set by Criterion Collection, and a one-disc set by Masters of Cinema.
