- SynopsisPeriod story of female impersonator who plans revenge on men who wronged his family. (Synopsis) During a performance in Tokugawa-period Edo, the actor Yukinojo recognises in the audience the men responsible for the suicide of his parents, and seeks vengeance upon them. Ichikawa evokes the aesthetic vocabulary of kabuki, yet the meting out of justice recalls the inexorable narratives of Jacobean drama. Sexually ambiguous, formally innovative (from its anachronistic yet strangely appropriate jazz score, to its abstract colour scheme and carefully partitioned use of CinemaScope), it is the most stylised and ambitious of Ichikawa's films, and represents the summit of his achievement as a craftsman.
