- SynopsisComedy. Steam traction engines are the passion of Jack Hopkins, who enters his beloved engine the Iron Maiden in rallies and competitions. Hopkins works as an aircraft designer for Sir Giles Thompson's company. With his new, as yet unnamed, plane, Thompson hopes to beat industry rival Lord Upshott to a multi-million-dollar contract from American airline tycoon Paul Fisher. Fisher arrives in Britain with his wife Miriam and daughter Kathy. Upshott sends his son Humphrey to win the Fishers over with an abundance of privileged social invitations which he feels will appeal to the ladies. On a country road, Kathy drives their Cadillac into the Iron Maiden and has a row with Hopkins. Soon the Fishers and Hopkins learn who each other are, and over the coming days a series of personal and professional truces and rows ensues, with Hopkins and Kathy both irritating and falling for each other. Fisher becomes besotted with the Iron Maiden and joins Hopkins in a cross-country journey to a rally at Woburn Abbey, the stately home of the Duke of Bedford. There they put the Iron Maiden through her paces in a bid to win a race, cheered on by Miriam and Kathy. Hopkins and Kathy are united, and Sir Giles wins the contract and names the new plane the Iron Maiden. (Synopsis)
