I Know Where I'm Going! - Romantic drama. A determined young Englishwoman goes to the Hebrides to marry her older, wealthier fiancé. While fog delays her journey she meets a young naval officer and falls in love with him, much against her better judgement. She also discovers that, although the natives of the island may have little in the way of money, they actually lead happy, satisfying lives. Written, produced and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger; director of photography: Erwin Hillier; production design: Alfred Junge Cast: Wendy Hiller, Roger Livesey, George Carney, Pamela Brown, Finlay Currie [The untamed island of Jura off the West Coast of Scotland was selected as the location, a challenge in war-time. James Mason was originally slated for 'Torquil', but seemed to have been put off by the basic living conditions in prospect during filming. Roger Livesey stepped into the role, despite appearing a West End show, a stand-in doubled up for him in the Highlands, with close-ups completed in the studio. The film was well received, although some critics remarked on the slightness of story-line. It was not released in America until August 1947. A restoration was completed in 1996 by the BFI National Archive] The Times commented 'I know Where I'm Going! doesn't even try to be a great movie, but it is a very good one in its charming unpretentious way'] Papers include cuttings; correspondence [See Emeric Pressburger papers EPR-1-24-1 for handwritten treatment by EP] - MLP-1-1-55
