- SynopsisDETECTIVE. Nayland Smith, comissioned by the British Government to investigate a series of murders comes up against the "Coughing Horror", Dr Fu-Manchu's servant. Adapted from the story by Sax Rohmer. (Synopsis) Rl. 1. Nayland Smith, commissioned by the British Government to investigate a series of murders, is captured with his assistant Dr. Petrie, by Fu Manchu and his servile accomplice, Karameneh. Smith saves one of Fu Manchu's victims, Antonio Strozza, and all are finally rescued by the police (880). Rl. 2 Strozza takes refuge at his cousin's farm. He is not long left in peace, however, for nightly he is awakened by the ape-like "Coughing Horror" seeking a chance to strangle him, by order of his master Fu Manchu. Terror-stricken, Antonio despatches his cousin to Smith with an urgent appeal for help; Smith and Petrie reach the farm concealed in a cart-load of baskets. That night the beast attacks Strozza. Smith and Petrie struggle with the monster which rolls off the roof, and, partly stunned by the fall rejoins the Chinaman in the garden. Its dismembered arm still remains gripping to Stozza's throat until detached by Petrie; Smith bitterly regrets having let the criminals escape (1871ft). (Shotlist)
