- SynopsisStory of a girl of humble circumstances who attempted to rise above her surroundings. From the novel by Booth Tarkington. (Synopsis) DRAMA. A young girl of lower middle class family, in spite of all her endeavours, fails to raise herself into a higher social sphere... incomplete. Based on the novel by Booth Tarkington. At home Alice Adams lives in an atmosphere of incessant bickering caused by the frustrated naggings of her mother, the bewildered weariness of her father, and the selfishness of her brother, Walter. Virgil Adams is recovering from a nervous breakdown and Alice tries to offset the moans of her mother by acting as a ray of sunshine to her suffering father. Alone, however she lives in a dream world of a gay life, luxury and social success. The night of the Palmer ball arrives, Alice is dressing in a thrill of excitement. Walter grudgingly agrees to accompany his sister. J.A. Lamb, Virgil Adams' venerated employer comes to see him and promises that Virgil's job will be kept for him. [Missing section - Alice makes pathetic attempts to pose as a rich girl when she meets a wealthy young man]. Alice has lived her dream life so vividly that she has given Arthur Russell a deceptive impression of her background. Arthur comes to visit her. Meanwhile, behind scenes panic ensues while Alice tries to get her parents into a presentable state.
