Synopsis: Set in a world inhabited by robots. Aspiring young inventor Rodney Copperbottom travels to the big city from a small town in the hopes of improving his life and impressing the renowned Bigweld, creator of the city who has encouraged inventive robots and whose motto has always been "no matter who you are you can shine". In the city he encounters the streetwise Fender and is disillusioned by what he finds. Bigweld's business empire has been effectively taken over by the sleek Ratchet, whose only interest is in making money, and who despises poor robots who can only afford to patch themselves up with parts rather than buy shiny new upgrades. He changes the company motto to "why be you when you can be new" and stops the company's production of parts, consigning those robots who cannot afford to buy upgrades to scrap, to be swept up by machines which will take them to be melted down in the factory owned by Ratchet's formidable mother. When the parts start to run out, Rodney helps to repair hordes of robots in Fender's neighbourhood, and he finds out that his own father needs new parts to survive. He and his friends track down Bigweld and together they try to overthrow Ratchet and reinstall Bigweld, aided in the final battle by all the shabby robots.
