Josephine and Men (Original title)
Date: 16 January 1956 (Release)

Country: United Kingdom

Director: Roy Boulting

Synopsis: Comedy about the fickle affections of Josephine, described as "a one-woman Salvation Army", who finds men attractive only when they are in desperate need. Her story is told by her uncle, Charles Luton, to the barman in the Parasites Club where he hides away from the ladies who are pursuing him. In Charles's story, Josephine is engaged to successful businessman Alan Hartley, but when Alan introduces her to his old schoolfriend David Hewer, a testy, budding playwright who lives in a grotty attic apartment, Josephine throws Alan over and marries David (on a Friday 13th). A few years later, David has made a success of himself by writing popular comedy plays. He and Josephine live in a country cottage in the village of Brackley. During a visit from Uncle Charles, Alan turns up at the cottage, seeking refuge. He is hiding out from the police, following a fraud scandal at his company (in which he had no part, but which he fears he will seem to be a party to). Alan plans to escape to a life in exile in South America. Seeing him so down on his luck, Josephine falls for him again and feels inclined to leave David (who is keen to see Alan gone). Charles alone sees the mistakes capricious Josephine and morose David are making and tries to reconcile them by presenting each with his own judicious selection of the facts.
