- SynopsisPeriod drama set around the start of the First World War. A young doctor, Jonathan Dakers, is forced by family finances to forego his training to be a consultant and to take up general practice, which he does in the Midlands mining town of Wednesford, working among the poor half of the town. He is in love with his childhood sweetheart, Edie Martyn, but she has grown to love his dashing brother Harold. When Harold goes to war, and is soon killed, Edie brings Jonathan dramatic news: she is pregnant. Jonathan marries her, to save her reputation and to give the boy a father, though by now Jonathan is in love with his medical partner's daughter, Rachel, an intelligent nurse. When Edie dies shortly after giving birth, Jonathan marries Rachel and they raise the boy as their own. The story is told in flashback as Jonathan, now old, explains to his son (now a doctor soldier in the Second World War) about his true parenthhood. The son reassures him that it will change nothing between them. (Synopsis)
