- SynopsisChannel 4 and the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) have joined forces in the Channel's largest ever TV giveaway: £10 million has been made available to back radical ideas tackling some of Britain's big issues. The Secret Millions follows five Channel 4 faces as they work with charities on the frontline developing new projects, while secretly trying to help secure £2 million of Lottery money that could turn the big idea into reality. Ninety percent of prisoners serving a short sentence are repeat offenders. After being released from prison, having a job is one of the most significant factors in preventing reoffending. But a criminal record makes finding work extremely difficult for many. Katie Piper has been asked to work with Acumen Trust, a charity helping to rehabilitate prisoners. Acumen run a carpentry workshop in Durham prison. They want to expand the project and set it up for ex-offenders as they're released; manufacturing and marketing high-end furniture and ultimately stopping them reoffending. As a high-profile victim of crime, Katie faces a personal challenge reconciling her emotions about both punishing and supporting prisoners. But she is determined to use her experiences to help those trying to make the best of their lives after their sentences. Working with a local community centre in their warehouse and with one of their key volunteers, Pamela, to find new recruits, Katie gets the group started producing a beautiful home furniture and accessories set, based around the design of a prison bench. The participants talk frankly and often emotionally about how tough life is after prison: battling the temptation to revert to old habits, with jobs out of reach and a lack of confidence in the future. Katie finds herself much more invested than she expected, but as she says, it's secretly really the Big Lottery Fund's opinion that counts. At the end of the project, will they have helped prove this is a worthy endeavour? ©Channel Four Publicity. (Synopsis)
