- SynopsisAn interview with Vanessa Redgrave on her acting career and her political awareness. Includes archive footage of her acting career and that of her parents. Lorry drivers driving through countryside. Large house. Local man talks about apprehension when 'they' come but everyone in the village likes 'her' (Vanessa Redgrave). Vanessa Redgrave talks about the school (opened 1975) being the most important achievement of 'our party'. It is open for courses from weekends to two weeks. British Movietonews extract of Oscar ceremonies including Vanessa Redgrave arriving with Franco Nero (?). Other archive footage of Vanessa Redgrave winning awards and other events including her as a child. Her daughters watch TV as she wins the Oscar for 'JULIA'. She refers to the 'Zionist hoodlums' in her acceptance speech. Extract from 'THE PALESTINIAN' with Vanessa Redgrave dancing with Kalashnikov. Main title. Vanessa Redgrave talks of her political awakening. Speaks of World War II, and Suez and says she didn't realise that these were political events. Then while she was at drama school the situation in Hungary with Soviet tanks prompted her to leave her course and go to help sort clothes etc. She talks about her childhood, being an evacuee and acting since she was six years old. She talks about her father (Michael Redgrave) and there is archive footage of parts he has played. Extract from King Lear with Michael Redgrave and Vanessa Redgrave as Cordelia. Vanessa talks about her mother (Rachel Kempson) and there is archive footage of her. Vanessa talks about dancing and Isadora Duncan and about her acting. Vanessa at the School (Workers Revolutionary Party) where there is a discussion taking place. She spaks of how in 1961 she joined the Committee of 100, a section of the movement fighting nuclear warfare, led by Bertrand Russell. Archive footage of a CND march. She was arrested a few times in her past. Discussion on nuclear weapons. Cuba, her interest in the society and cinema. Why she decided not to join the Communist Party and her dismay with Soviet bureaucracy. Archive footage of her involvement with Vietnam. She talks about her participation in the 1964 election, supporting the Labour Party then her disillusionment as they did the opposite of what they had said and supported the Vietnam war. They also broke other pledges and she left the Labour Party. Discussion on her involvement in the postmans strike (c1971) while she was working on 'THE DEVILS' and her involvement with the Workers Revolutionary Party. She talks about the need to bring down the Tory government and to defend the Unions. There was a pageant at Wembly Arena of the Workers Revolutionary Party and she decided she must join. (Shotlist)
