- SynopsisElizabeth's reluctance to marry created much political and religious tension. Her refusal to choose a spouse from France or Spain - both considered to be a threat to the English nation - concerned the queen's advisers most. David Starkey assesses another threat to Elizabeth's position: Mary, Queen of Scots, who was poised to claim the throne and return the country to Catholic rule. The Queen's favourite, Lord Dudley, was proposed as a husband for Mary. Dudley and Elizabeth had both been imprisoned in the Tower of London by Mary, Elizabeth's half-sister, where a bond had grown between them. Dudley wanted Elizabeth's hand in marriage, but he was put forward as a possible husband for the troublesome Mary, Queen of Scots, in order to neutralise the danger if the latter were to marry into a foreign monarchy. The plan came to nothing, but it illustrates the lengths to which Elizabeth would go to preserve her country. (NFA Catalogue)
