- SynopsisDocumentary which focuses on the disease of leprosy, and in particular on the last leprosarium in the United States, Carville, which lies near the Mississippi River. Carville is a self-contained `city', established in 1921 by the federal government to offset public fears about the disease. For the next 36 years all continental US citizens diagnosed with leprosy were forcibly transported to Carville and stripped of most of their democratic rights. Ironically, in 1957, when the quarantine was finally lifted, all the residents decided to stay. (NFA Catalogue)
