- SynopsisAttitudes to and facts about renewable energy sources in Britain. The various options of solar energy are discussed, namely active solar energy, photovoltaics, and passive solar design. The Department of Energy favours the last option. Biofuels are explored, namely forestry residues, thermal processing of dry waste, anaerobic digestion of wet waste, and combustion of dry waste. The option of landfill gas is suggested as being economically viable. Wind power as used by the wind turbines in the Orkneys. The usefulness of water power is considered by means of tidal energy as in the case of the Severn Barrier; shoreline wave energy which is considered to be promising; and small scale hydropower which is also favoured by the Department of Energy. Geothermal heat through means of acquifers and experiments in Cornwall on hot dry rocks is also outlined. (NFA Catalogue)
