- SynopsisThe ambitions of a Jew in the eighteenth century who seeks political power in order that he may use it to benefit the status of Jewry in an anti-Semitic order of society. (Synopsis)
- Work historyThe following statement regarding the story appears after the opening credits: 'Würtemberg in the Eighteenth Century was a small independent state, ruled by an hereditary duke. It was a time of brutality and universal intolerance and the Jews above all suffered oppression and boycott. At last there rose up a man who - by sacrificing all to securing political power - resolved to bring prestige to the State and to break down, once and for all, the barriers of the Ghetto. Joseph Süss Oppenheimer was a man of human fraility. His work remained unfinished - his story lives.' The following statement appears at the end of the film: 'Perhaps one day the walls will crumble like the walls of Jericho and all the world will be one people.'
