Spelling with the Spellits (Original title)
Date: 10 September 2002 (Television)

Country: United Kingdom

Synopsis: A series of eight programmes featuring the animated `Spellit' characters, Ears, Eyes and Brain that were introduced in the earlier `Spelling strategies' series. The programmes for Years 3 to 6 use animated characters and comedy sketches designed to bring the National Curriculum and spelling rules to life. The series is directly linked to the National Literacy Strategy, which requires children to investigate rules and patterns. The two programmes for Year 3 look at spelling rules, such as word endings, adding prefixes to make new words, making compound words, how to use apostrophes, crating new words using suffixes and making nouns plural. The Year 4 programmes look at how to make verbs using suffixes, making new words by adding suffixes, adding endings to regular verbs, revisiting the use of the apostrophe and how to decide about double letters. The Year 5 programmes explore more plural forms, how to deal with soft c and soft g, how to distinguish between common homophones and when to drop e before adding and ending; The Year 6 programmes recap on earlier spelling units.
