Country: United Kingdom

Shotlist: COMEDY. Trick. With the aid of a witch/fairy, a young nobleman rescues his sweetheart from an enforced marriage to an evil knight. [Initial section missing] An evil knight bullies the guards outside his castle. A priest, brought to him at spearpoint, begs not to have to preside over an enforced marriage. Meanwhile, a young nobleman climbs up to a window. The knight sees him, rushes into the castle and clubs him unconscious as he embraces a young woman held captive there. The woman is dragged out of the room. When the nobleman recovers, a witch appears before him, changes into a fairy and back to a witch before leading him away. At the church door, guards are holding back a crowd. As the priest welcomes the evil knight and the young woman, the fairy appears and bars the way. She turns into the witch and then into a gravestone. When the knight clubs the top off the gravestone, it becomes the headless witch, who picks up the head and replaces it. As the guards seize her, she is transformed into the fairy, before whom they kneel, then back again to witch, whom they drag away. The young nobleman struggles in vain with the priest as the knight drags the young woman away. The guards and the mob fail to kill the witch by hanging, by drowning in a well or by strangulation. When the nobleman arrives, he is killed and dismembered by the knight. The witch restores the limbs to the body and brings him back to life. At the church. the knight, distracted by the appearance of the fairy, is killed in a swordfight with the nobleman. The priest emerges from the church, begs forgiveness and invites the young couple to enter (444ft). Note: The young nobleman is played by a woman. Gravestones on the set carry the following legends: "I'm waiting for you here (?) Hepwix." and "In memory of Sir. Heppwix. Scrunstein." Note: There is another copy of this film from the same collection (Joye) which has the main title in German which carries a Gaumont logo.
